Active Adventures: The North Island

I want to...

With a Maori name that translates as the “Land of the Long White Cloud” you may be forgiven for thinking that New Zealand is a laid back, sedentary country characterised by amazing scenery and good food. But here’s the truth, New Zealand is a land filled with adrenalin sports, high sea adventures and activities that will challenge the fittest of us. In fact, activities on the North Island are abundant.

What is there to do I hear you ask? Excellent question! Let’s take a look at the North Island (a separate piece on the South Island is coming) for starters and give you a list of action-packed things to do. We are not talking all the usual activities you may hear about (Hawkes Bay for example. Whilst it is awesome, we are going for more of the less known items).

To be honest, it makes sense to start a travel journey at the extreme most point of a place and not many places come further extreme than the far North point of Cape Reinga. Located on the Aupouri Peninsula at the most north-western point (there is a point at Surville Cliffs that is slightly further north), where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean, this is one of the most spiritual places in New Zealand. Marked by an ancient Pohutukawa tree and a lighthouse, the region is known through history as the place recently departed spirits make the journey from into the afterlife.

The walks in the area are nothing short of breath-taking and the view at the base of the lighthouse something you will never forget (in fact, fun fact, there is a signpost here showing the distances to many different cites around the world). For the truly brave, why not consider a Skydive over the Bay of Islands – it is an experience we haven’t forgotten, and we are sure you never will either.

We recommend a visit here if you are on the North Is as there is a truly magical and spiritual feel to the area. There are some campgrounds you can make yourself at home in, so come, start your adventure here.

At any time of the year, Auckland is a very pretty city; with two picturesque harbours filled with Super Yachts, to a volcanic backdrop and deep blue seas, it is hard not to fall in love with it all. But too often tourists to this city concentrate on what they can do on-land, forgetting that there is a world of adventure just off the coast. In fact, the Hauraki Gulf which spans from Auckland to the Coromandel Peninsula encompasses marine reserves, stunning coastlines and over 50 unique islands.

So we’re recommending you park your campervan somewhere (or perhaps leave it at Red Beach campervan Park) and organise a tour. There are plenty of options so here are a few different things you may want to consider:

  • Hiking on the Rangitoto volcano to see the view from the summit
  • Surfing on Great Barrier Island or the Kauri trail walk
  • Catching the sunrise on Mount Hobson (this is not for the faint of heart or those who don’t like a workout)
  • Explore Rotoroa Island and try the walking trails, sculpture walks or a tour of the old jail. And here’s a fun fact – the island used to be used for rehabilitation for those who were drug or alcohol dependent
  • Go Dolphin spotting
  • Check out Coromandel town. This once-upon-a-time gold mining town is now a destination filled with things to do – Hot Water beach, The Lost Spring Spa, and multiple hikes.
  • Take a bush walk, go kayaking or take a cruise through Cathedral Cove, a beautiful area with majestic limestone formations that have to be seen to be believed
  • And if you want something a less high-speed, try Waiheke Island for fine dining and good wine

All in all, you may want to dedicate a couple of days Island hopping to enjoy everything you can. Once done, move to Stop 3.

Piha Beach at Sunset is seriously amazing - Photo credit Aaron BirchThis is not going to be a recommendation for everyone, but if big surf, black sand beaches and awesome hikes overlooking the ocean are your thing, then Karekare, Muriwai and Piha (seriously, the surf here is insane) are must do’s for your list. On the West Coast of Auckland, the roads, the scenery and the beaches have to be seen to be believed.

As with other recommendations, you may want a day here, or maybe a few to enjoy the surf (really depends on the time of year), but whatever you choose, we know you are going to remember stopping here for years to come.

It is going to take you some four and a half hours to get here from Waitomo so you may want to stop and see the sites on the way (EG Rotorua and the mud baths of Hell’s Gate) but when you get here you will know why we suggested you get here in the first place.

There are no majestic towers, no amazing rock formations, but there is plenty of densely covered forest walks which will occupy the avid explorer for hours on end. In actual fact, the area is the largest forested wilderness remaining in the North Island, so put on your boots, grab your food and water supplies for a few hours and hit the trails to discover suspension bridges, towering waterfalls, crystal clear lakes and an array of wildlife. You will easily lose 4 hours here without blinking, so make sure your campervan has supplies for the night as you are likely to be making the most of its comforts.

From here our recommendation is you head to Hastings on the East Coast to reconsider where to next. It may take you a day or two to decide where you want to go next as there is plenty to do here including some great pubs, the Cliff railways and the Old Town as well.

What Others are Saying

We like to help people out and have the best holidays around Australia possible. But don’t take our word for it, here’s what others have had to say.
