NORTH ISLAND
The North Island may be the smaller of the two main islands in New Zealand but with its major city Auckland being home to almost a third of New Zealand’s population, what it lacks in size it sure makes up for in diversity.
Home to tranquil beaches, stunning offshore islands and vast vineyards, the North Island has many different sides, all of which can be experienced in your campervan. With ample free campsites and picturesque backdrops, its every backpackers dream location.
Situated on the ring of fire, the North Island is well-known for it’s volcanic activity, making it an excellent destination lava lovers and hikers. Don’t let that put you off though, many of the volcanoes are extinct or dormant and only some are still active.

SOUTH ISLAND
The South Island is known as the adventure capital of the two islands and is an popular destination for thrill seekers and daredevils alike. The less densely populated islands of the two, yet arguably the more action packed, the South Island is home to bungee jumping, sky diving and even heliskiing.
There’s not many places in the world that you can hang out at the beach and hit the slopes all in the same day, but of course on the South Island you can. If you want tick off the ‘New Zealand Double’ on your road trip bucket list, then take a two hour drive from Christchurch to Mt. Hutt ski resort to hit the sand and snow into the same day.
As well as sand, slopes and skydiving, the South Island is home to many stunning glaciers, most of which are located near the Main Divide in the Southern Alps.
If you’re more of a culture vulture then head to the creative hub that is Christchurch for your fix of art, fashion and of course, great coffee.
