Christchurch

I want to...

Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island, located just on the east coast. Just like the rest of New Zealand’s cities you can expect to find amazing coffee, delicious food and of course wildlife and beaches whichever way you turn. Centrally located halfway down the east coast of the South Island, organising your Campervan rental in Christchurch makes sense and is a popular location for many to start their road trip.

If you’re yearning for some sand beneath your toes, then just 20 minutes from the CBD is Cave Rock. Cave Rock is a volcanic formation that sits on the golden sands of Summer beach. Head down with some coffee and a book, enjoy the peaceful sounds of the clear waves crashing and if you’ve got little ones in tow, check out the rock pools and fish – if you’re lucky you’ll see some fish swimming right up to the shoreline. Seemingly less windy than New Brighton beach, Summer beach and Cave Rock is a popular spot with both locals and tourists.

New Brighton beach is known for its pier, water sports activities and for being very family friendly, located just 10 minutes outside of the CBD.

If you want to stay within the city but need some greenery, then we suggest checking out the Christchurch Botanic Gardens and North Hagley Park. Both places offer lush greenery, exotic plant species and some welcome tranquility amongst the hustle and bustle of city life.

Willowbank Wildlife Sanctuary in New Zealand is a must see

Willowbank Wildlife reserve Is known for its exotic birds

If you want to see some wildlife without heading too far out of the city then make a trip to Willowbank Wildlife reserve. Here you can immerse yourself with the native wildlife and watch the Kiwis, Kea and Tuatara all roam free, and they’ll eat out of your hand if you’re lucky!

Once you’ve explored the city and you’re ready to hit the road again with your trusty campervan, we suggest taking a short 1 hour 20 drive to Akaroa. Akaroa is a town located on the Banks Peninsula, southeast of Christchurch, and is the first and only French settlement in NZ. Akaroa beach is where you can find the rare hector’s dolphins swimming, a truly magical sight if seen. Boat trips and swimming tours are available to book online.

If you’re feeling a tad thirsty whilst staying in Christchurch, then why not head to the Waipara Wine Region. Only a 55 minute drive from Christchurch, it’s a popular choice with travellers due to the close proximity of the wineries and the stunning landscapes. With campsites available to book, you can allow a few days here and really unwind and enjoy the offerings of the region. Please always drink responsibly.

If you need to rejuvenate after enjoying too many fermented grapes in the Waipara Wine Region, then head slightly further up north to Hamner springs. Here you can truly relax and unwind in the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa. If you need some gentle activity whilst you are there, then check out the hike and bicycle trails. It’s worth noting that Hanmer Springs is also the gateway to both the Lewis Pass National Reserve and St. James Conservation Area.

The city of Christchurch has a temperate, relatively dry climate with rain falling on fewer days than New Zealand’s other major cities. Overall Christchurch’s climate is comfortable all year round, although winter nights can be cold and frosts are common. The average temperature of Christchurch in January is 22.5°C and 11.3°C in July. Temperatures in summer are often moderated by cool sea breezes.
